We had a wonderful Lights On Afterschool event in Seattle last week at South Shore School in one of the most ethnically diverse neighborhoods in the country. We titled our event Lights On Afterschool: Celebrating Science & Technology! and invited science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) focused organizations: Puget Sound Off and Technology Access Foundation along with Pacific Science Center, Yakima Valley Tri Cities MESA, King County Youth Development Network, SOAR, School’s Out Washington, Kid’s Co., and Pacific Northwest Girls Collaborative Project.
We even had a program bring several tables full of interactive bilingual (Spanish-English) science exhibits from across the state. To kick-off the evening the Washington Afterschool Network presented the Hall of Fame awards and youth performed. Through the help of partners (Kids Co.), we were also able to provide a Torani soda bar, free pizza and raffle prizes to all attendees. We had a little over 250 people total in attendance. The Washington News Service did a fantastic interview and we were covered in a few local papers!
Nationally this was a record year with over 9,300 events! More than half of states (27) grew their number of events by more than 50% and Washington State grew by 75%! Well done! See the table below with all states info.
Your Lights On Afterschool photo could be worth $1,000! Bright House Networks has teamed up with the Afterschool Alliance to support the afterschool programs that keep our kids safe, inspire them to learn and help working families through the Lights On Afterschool Photo Contest. How can you win? Take pictures that show the spirit of your event. Between Oct 18 and 31, enter your best photo in the Lights On Afterschool Photo Contest on Facebook. Then, rally your troops to vote for your entry. The 3 entries with the most votes will each win a $1,000 donation to your afterschool program. Photos can be of events, people, places or anything related to Lights On Afterschool, and must include a caption that describes the photo and how they are celebrating afterschool. See official rules for more details. Submissions are only accepted until Oct 31.
Thanks for being part of the nation’s largest rally for afterschool!
